Renovation Plans: Are You On The Same Page?

Next

Have you confirmed your budget & and schedule with your partner?

Yikes! (Don’t skip this😳)

If you’re not the sole decision-maker in the house, don’t forget to loop in your partner and be sure to come to an agreement on budget and timing.

This is actually a pretty common project-stopper.

Not being on the same page can really throw a wrench into your renovation plans (no pun intended), and create some serious friction in your relationship.

If you are "ready for reno" but haven’t talked it through with your partner yet, here are some of the things you should talk about…

  1. Are we (both) ready for a renovation?
  2. What does the future look like? Are there other renovations to consider that will cost us more?
  3. How much are we both willing to spend, in total, on this renovation?
  4. Do we have enough money today to fund our renovation?: If not how can we save the right amount in the timeline we would like?
  5. If something unexpected comes up during the renovation, are we prepared to take on that kind of challenge right now?
  6. Which part of the renovation are you willing to spend more on?
  7. Which part of the renovation are we okay with spending less on?
  8. When is a good time to start a renovation?
  9. What is coming up in both our schedules (personally and together) that might conflict with starting a renovation?
  10. How would a renovation affect our family/guests/future events?

If struggle to answer any of these questions, consider writing them down and bringing them up with your contractor once you meet.

Knowing when you want to get started and how much you're willing to spend, as a team, is a great place to start!
